Abdel Salam El-Gabaly, head of the committee, the committee indicated that the government seeks to achieve self-sufficiency in the basic needs of citizens, on top of which is meat production, which comes within the directives of the political leadership to achieve an abundance of goods and the needs of the Egyptian citizen, where the self-sufficiency percentage of Red meat is about 55% and 45% is imported from abroad. The total needs of meat reached about 950 thousand tons during 2021, of which 520 thousand tons were from local production and 430 thousand tons were imported from abroad (of which 330 thousand tons were chilled and frozen meat and liver). Adding, there is another reason for the increase in meat prices, which is the decline in the import of meat from abroad in light of the confusion of the import and export operations of meat in most countries of the world as a result of the emergence of the Corona pandemic and the emergence of some serious epidemic diseases, as Egypt prohibits the import of any meat from any country in which dangerous animal diseases appear before Ensure the safety and suitability of meat for human consumption and that it is free of any diseases and that it conforms to local and international specifications. In addition, the rise in shipping and transportation fees and currency prices, low animal productivity, lack of natural pastures, and a decrease in the areas planted with fodder crops have led to a significant increase in meat prices in the recent period.
